Well Dressing. Ancient custom of well dressing unique to Derbyshire. Thought to originate from Pagan ritual of worshipping water. Wells are decorated with living material, flowers, petals, bark, stems, twigs etc. all laid onto a bed of clay in a wooden frame to make a picture. Leaflet available from tourist information giving dates and venues of which there are about 70 dressings from the beginning of May to early September.

Eyam. 119/218765 The plague village. Self imposed quarantine to prevent the plague spreading, exchange of food and payment for same made at Mompesson's well outside the village. Well named after Eyam's vicar at the time of the plague.

Cromford & High Peak Railway. Early railway built on canal type principle with level sections where horses pulled wagons connected by inclined planes on which rope haulage was used to move the wagons up and down. Southern end at High Peak Junction Workshops 119/313560. Visit also Cromford Wharf, Sheep Pasture Incline. The railway trackbed is now a leisure trail and cycle hire is available at Middleton Top.
